Interpretation of Hollow Ichigo (Aka Eski should do tags instead)

OKAY WELL

I decided to put down my thoughts on Ichigo's hollow and the point where I play him at (well, when I do play him that is). Currently in Canon, Ichigo's finally been through his "YOU'RE NOT MEEEEEEEEE" stage and accepted his Hollow, thus gaining his persona true Zanpakuto. But, I tend to play Ichigo (and Hichi by extension) at before or after the FB arc, because I like to play around with the whole denial aspect and how the hollow represents the things Ichigo doesn't show to the world.

First off, let's start with the basics-Hichi (Or Zangetsu, I guess, but for the purposes of this I'm going to call him Hichi) is Ichigo's hollow, but also his id. As in, of Freud's theory of the Id, Ego, and Superego. You can find more about that here but keep in mind that's literally four years old. I'm going to assume you read that, so you know what I'm talking about.

Now, we know hichi is the id, the instincts and repressed desires Ichigo has. But he also has a personality, which we see when he interacts with Ichigo in his inner world. With this in mind, I'm going to outline just what that is, using canon and my knowledge about Ichigo to fill in any gaps. Keep in mind some of this is speculative headcanon, since the hollow never interacts with anyone besides Ichigo (and briefly, Orihime).

The hollow is violent, and utterly loves to fight-it's one of the things he screams at Ichigo for, in their inner world-that Ichigo needed a reason to fight, while he didn't. Hichi is the instincts that Ichigo has, just given a face and turned up to 11. And honestly, while Ichigo dislikes to hurt people...this IS the kid who will punch people who start shit up with him. He's very much on the 'fight' response of fight-or-flight.

Anyway, while the hollow is violent and loves to fight, he's also very intelligent-just as much as Ichigo is, and Ichigo is pretty smart. He's an instinctual being to his very core, so he may follow said instincts more, but this doesn't mean he won't use his intelligence or cunning.

Speaking of cunning, the hollow is very manipulative. He's not the 'dance puppets dance' kind of manipulator, but the kind that tugs on your emotions in order to achieve what he wants, no matter if that's to goad you into a fight or get you to do something for him. Being a personification of the subconscious, he's good at reading the signals people give off and using them to his own advantage.

The first thing someone would notice about him-well, beyond his crazy looks-is that he's always smiling in a sort of smug, dangerous way. This alone is opposite to Ichigo's normal expression, which is normally scowling and closed off. But that smugness isn't skin deep-it's confidence, which is a stark contrast to how Ichigo is AND a sign of the utter egotistical jerk he is. Someone who is self-centered tends to think highly of themselves-and that's exactly what the hollow does.

It's yet another aspect of Ichigo that he'd never show. Ichigo puts other people ahead of himself, and is often insecure in the things he does (like any normal teenager.) But the hollow, being the id, puts himself first before anyone else. Any possessions, object or person, follow this rule-where the hollow is number one, and all the rest are just number two.

This isn't to say the hollow ranks what he has-he doesn't, because Ichigo doesn't do that. And where Ichigo is a protector, the hollow is possessive-keeping things or people around because they benefit him, or make him feel good. It's a very selfish and childish way of seeing things, and even though he'd get angry and fight until he's bloodied for something that he sees as his...it's not really done in order to protect them. If anything, he's just protecting what's his. On that note, he is dangerous when you slight him or attempt to usurp his place, because he carries a grudge and will go to lengths to carry out his revenge.

He speaks in a harsh, almost rude sort of way-and make no mistake, the hollow is rude. He has no concept of having filters or what's seen as acceptable, and while he's aware the rest of the world follows those rules...he generally doesn't give a shit. Why should those rules even apply to him? If asked, he'd sneer and call them stupid.

However, not having a filter means that he's unable to lie. Lying is something done by the ego and superego-not the Id. So while he's brash, rude, and downright unpleasant at times...he will never lie. At most, he would refrain from mentioning something. It also ties into his confidence-after all, why should he lie? Lying is for cowards who can't handle the consequences of their actions.

His views on Ichigo are...complicated. As the mirror to all the thoughts and doubts Ichigo hides, he generally sees Ichigo as someone who's not worth all the attention, love, and trust he's given by his friends and family. If asked, he'd say Ichigo is weak and pathetic-and instantly talk himself up, saying how much better he is than that useless idiot. Some of it is bluster-because if Ichigo dies, he dies-but most of it is a genuine reflection of the insecurity and self-loathing Ichigo holds for himself. In the places where I take him, Ichigo still doesn't think he's good enough-not consciously, perhaps, but definitely subconsciously. And while he'll angrily say that he-and his power-aren't related, they are. It's just yet another reflection of Ichigo's rejection of the hollow-of himself.

To sum up the hollow: He's incredibly egotistical, manipulative, selfish, rude, and dangerous. If you manage to get on his good side, he'll be just as loyal as Ichigo is-but his loyalties are also very self-serving. And, well...don't ever get on his bad side. Not if you like your limbs.
