[Adachi takes his time in responding - for dramatic effect, really.]
...Don't tell him I said anything about this, but... [He swallows.] there was this girl back home. She was just a year ahead of him when he was still at Yasogami.
Saki Konishi.
Has... Has Yosuke ever mentioned her to you at all?
[IChigo hadn't asked Yosuke much about his life back home, honestly. Beyond the whole persona thing, it seemed...too painful to talk about their old lives, really.
Lives they would never be able to get back to-or at least, that was how Ichigo was feeling about it.]
Didn't think he would. She's, er... She's gone now. She was the second victim in a string of murders back in Inaba.
[Oh, would you look at that? He almost sounds sad about it.]
I was one of the detectives assigned to find her killer, but after eight months, we still haven't gotten any closer to catching him. We're stuck. [A great, heaving, guilty breath.] I'm stuck.
And even though Adachi is a wonderful actor, there's still a niggling sense of doubt that rises in Ichigo's mind. The emotion he saw in Yosuke's soul...it wasn't just resentment. It was Hatred, pure and simple.
But...the thought makes him feel terrible. Adachi might not know that Yosuke hates him so much-and he did sound terribly guilty. But it didn't seem like Yosuke was the kind of person to hate someone so deeply just for being unable to solve the murder of someone close to him.
He's not telling you everything, a small voice whispered in the back of his mind. A voice that, try as Ichigo might to dismiss it...simply wouldn't go away.
He stays silent for a long time, and then-]
...Resent isn't the word I'd use.
[He hesitates, and then-]
He hates you, Adachi-san.
[Maybe Yosuke didn't want him to know, so he shouldn't have said that...but at the same time, he wanted to hear something that would dispel that doubt he had, creeping around in the back of his mind.]
[...dammit. Ichigo is nothing if not easily emotionally manipulated when you've gained his trust, and for now? The doubt in his mind fades away, replaced with only a slight-self loathing for daring to think that something was weird for a few moments.]
[As much as he likes Adachi, Ichigo knows Yosuke. Or at least, he thinks he does. There's something else going on, and that voice is back inside his head...and this time, he's willing to listen for a little while.]
It's just kind of awkward is all, y'know? Having to tell a friend that another good friend of his really hates your guts. Last thing I want to do is make things even more uncomfortable than they already were for you back there.
[He doesn't even notice that Adachi never answered his question in the first place-no, he just focuses on the other man's words, because...he has to mean it, right?]
That might be a little more...understandable, then. Why Yosuke hates Adachi so much-but then again, at the same time...
It still doesn't sit well with him, for some reason.]
Keep it between us, right?
[And that certainly was something he was getting used to hearing from Adachi. But it was kind of...nice, that Adachi trusted him enough to ask. And as loyal as Ichigo is to the people that get his trust, he really will keep it between just the two of them.

Like the fog buried in Adachi's very soul.]
...You don't have to tell me, but...What happened?

[What a good job he does, sounding surprised and all one second. Absolutely defeated the next.]
Well. Can't say I really blame him.
no subject
He...didn't really say it. I kind of...saw it.
[Or did Adachi forget about his soul sight?]
no subject
[He can do that. Meaning "resents" was probably a very poor choice of words on his part. Shit.]

[Should he say anything else? This is...awkward enough as it is, but...]
...Can I ask you something, Adachi-san?
no subject
Sure. Go ahead.

[1 / 2]
[He'll have to try and tackle this very carefully. He can't afford to slip up again and make Ichigo more suspicious here. Can't expose himself now.]
[2 / 2]
...Sorry if I did.

Will he buy it?]
...Don't apologize, Adachi-san. I understand.
[He doesn't even notice that Adachi never answered his question in the first place-no, he just focuses on the other man's words, because...he has to mean it, right?]
Thanks for trying to look out for me.

[You can practically visualize that clumsy wince on the other end.]
Try not to mention her around him, okay? Truth is, he kind of had a little thing for her, so -
[And the one after that.]
Crap. Probably shouldn't have told you that, either... [He clears his throat.] D-Don't worry, though. I'll figure something out. Just, please.
["Keep this between us." Kind of an odd pattern their conversations seem to be falling into, isn't it?]

...Took the words right out of my mouth. Thanks.
